Uganda adds a mountain gorilla to its growing population. Mishaya gorilla family in Rushaga added a new member to its troop as we saw one of the mother gorilla Biretwa holding a new born baby in its arms.

It’s celebrations in Mishaya Gorilla family in Rushaga, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park as they get a baby. Both baby Gorilla & mother Biretwa in good health. The baby brings the number in the family to 12 individual.

Uganda has now more than 460 mountain gorillas in its natural habitats of Bwindi impenetrable forests and Mgahinga (one of the parts of volcanoes massif). The mountain gorillas are endangered species under the red list of International Union of Conservation for Nature (IUCN) one of the most recognized natural environment conservation bodies in the world. The mountain gorillas are under the threat of getting extinct in the forthcoming generation if not protected.

In the 1960s-1980, the world witnessed the drastic decrease in the population of mountain gorillas in the world due to loss of habitats for settlement, civil wars, epidemic diseases and poachers. The mountain gorillas who were in thousands turned into hundreds during the torrid period. It became a great concern to primatologists like Diana Fossey who embarked on the conservation and preservation of these huge primates in the central east African forests.

Diana Fossey did a great job which was admired by the governments of Uganda, Rwanda and Dr. Congo which took efforts to gazette areas where the mountain gorillas inhabited that is to say Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga National park in Uganda, volcanoes national park in Rwanda and Virunga national park in Dr Congo.

At the beginning of 1990s, the countries where the mountain gorillas are found embarked on the journey to save mountain gorillas from extinction and one of the solution was promoting gorilla tourism commonly known as gorilla trekking.  The initiative has been very fruitful as we have seen the gorillas double their population which were only about 400 individuals in the whole world to more about 1000 in accordance to the recent carried census.

Mishaya adding a new individual to the growing population is a plus to the conservation world.
