Lake Mutanda is a small fresh water lake located in south western Uganda in Kisoro district. This lake is approximately 20 kilometers north of Kisoro town. The connection by road from Kampala the capital city of Uganda is about 454 Kilometers. There are scheduled flights by Aerolink connecting to Kisoro in the morning daily. The flight’s origin is Entebbe airport and takes about an hour and 15 minutes from Entebbe to Kisoro airstrip.
Lake Mutanda is nestled in the foothills of the Virunga Mountain Range which is home to the three volcanoes namely; Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura. These three volcanoes can be clearly viewed from Lake Mutanda. This is one of the places with the highest altitude in Uganda, standing at an elevation of about 1,800 meters above sea level.
Lake Mutanda is strategically located between the two national parks in Uganda that are home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas that is; Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
This area is particularly an important tourist area because while here, you are able to engage in a number of tourist activities which include, Gorilla Trekking, Golden Monkey Trekking, Batwa Cultural Experience, Forest Walk, Canoe rides, Birding, Fishing, Hiking the volcanoes, swimming, and most importantly, relaxation because this lake provides a billion dollar view!
